From the famous images of galaxies, nebulae and structures such as the Pillars of Creation photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope to the many numerous photos of stars and planets as taken by astrophotographers worldwide, we now have an intimate glimpse into the aesthetics of what lies beyond Earth. Alien worlds have been imagined further in film and TV but the possibilities are nearly limitless and there is so much left to explore through art. From the alien skies of exoplanets to the deep seas that lie beneath moons and planets in our own solar system, art must seek to explore more off-Earth topics.
My work seeks to explore some of these concepts through futuristic and colourful otherworldly forms. Most images start off as real materials arranged as physical compositions before being photographed and edited to breathe extraterrestrial life into them. Digital editing is the last step in the process, and actually, whilst I typically label my work as ‘digital art’, materials such as wax, stone, glass, paints, sprays and ink form most of the initial composition. This novel process-based method is tactile and incorporates a degree of randomness – you can’t quite be sure of the outcome.
